When assigning a gateway to a Location in WisDM, the system may return specific error messages or statuses. These messages indicate why the assignment failed or requires attention.
This article explains the most common statuses and how to resolve them.
Click the question mark (?) icon to view more details about the error or status.
Error & Status Descriptions
Invalid
Description:
The gateway has missing or incorrect certificate information required for the assignment.
Typical Cause:
- Device not properly provisioned
- Missing or corrupted certificate data
Recommended Action:
- Re-provision the gateway
- If possible, reboot the gateway locally
- Contact RAK WisDM Support via the built-in support form in WisDM
Shadow Error
Description:
An issue occurred while retrieving the device data from the cloud.
Typical Cause:
- AWS is not accessible
- Backend communication issue
Recommended Action:
- Check gateway connectivity and power
- Retry after a short time
- Contact RAK WisDM Support via the built-in support form in WisDM
Unavailable
Description:
The system cannot retrieve the gateway’s data.
Typical Cause:
- Gateway not yet connected to WisDM
- Cloud-side delay or sync issue
Recommended Action:
- Ensure the gateway is powered and online
- Wait and retry the assignment
- Contact RAK WisDM Support via the built-in support form in WisDM
Invalid EUI
Description:
The provided Gateway EUI is incorrect or malformed.
Typical Cause:
- Typo during manual entry
- Wrong EUI format
Recommended Action:
- Verify the EUI from the device label
- Ensure correct format (typically 16 hex characters)
Incompatible
Description:
The gateway is not compatible with the selected configuration or system requirements.
Typical Cause:
- Unsupported firmware version - some new WisDM features require the gateway to be on the latest firmware
- Adding a 8 channel gateway to a Location configured for 16 channels
- Adding a 9xx band gateway to the 8xx Location (or vice versa)
Recommended Action:
- Verify device compatibility
- Update firmware if applicable
Provisioning
Description:
The gateway is currently undergoing provisioning.
Typical Cause:
- The device is being initialized or registered
Recommended Action:
- Wait until provisioning completes
- Retry assignment if needed
Unsupported
Description:
The gateway model or configuration is not supported.
Typical Cause:
- Unsupported hardware
- Unsupported feature set
- Old Firmware
Recommended Action:
- Confirm the device is supported by WisDM
- Use a compatible gateway model
- Update to the latest Firmware
Already in Location
Description:
The gateway is already assigned to the selected location.
Typical Cause:
- Duplicate assignment attempt
Recommended Action:
- No action required
- Gateway is already correctly assigned
Duplicate
Description:
A duplicate gateway entry was detected.
Typical Cause:
- Usually duplicated records in the CSV file when a bulk action is executed
- Same gateway added multiple times
- Conflict in system records
Recommended Action:
- Remove duplicate entry
- Ensure only one instance exists
| Status / Error | Meaning | Action Required |

| Shadow Error | Cloud communication issue (device data cannot be retrieved) | Check power/connectivity, retry, contact WisDM support |
| Unavailable | Gateway data not available (not connected or sync delay) | Ensure the device is online, wait and retry, contact WisDM support |
| Invalid EUI | Incorrect or malformed Gateway EUI | Verify EUI (16 hex characters) from device label |
| Incompatible | Device does not match location/configuration requirements | Check compatibility, update firmware, verify band/channels match |
| Provisioning | Gateway is still being initialized | Wait for provisioning to complete, then retry |
| Unsupported | Device/model/firmware not supported | Use a supported device, update firmware |
| Already in Location | Gateway is already assigned to the selected location | No action required |
| Duplicate | Duplicate gateway entry detected (e.g., bulk import issue) | Remove duplicates, ensure only one record exists |
Notes
- Most errors are related to device provisioning, cloud sync, or duplicate handling
- Always verify:
- Gateway EUI and SN number from the label or provided by RAK data
- Device connectivity
- WisDM registration status
